- W65506091 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the prevalence of AIDS, and other chronic illnesses and key issues facing people with these diseases. It then explains how animals can enhance the quality of life for people with chronic and terminal illnesses, drawing on an ecosystem model of how animals contribute to a quality home life for patients who are still able to live at home. The ecosystem model delineates the multiple sources of support an individual may draw on and the role a companion animal can play as a source of support. Furthermore, this chapter focuses on more practical aspects of such programs by reviewing how guidelines were developed for human-animal support services (HASS) for persons with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It then deals with specific concerns health care providers may want to consider when investigating the impact of companion animals on persons with AIDS, and individuals with other chronic or fatal illnesses. Finally, it describes the Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) program in San Francisco and how similar programs can be implemented elsewhere." @default.
