- W655111087 abstract "A total of 63 beetle species and varieties in 42 genera from 17 families plus an additional six taxa identified only to genus were found in samples of food products entering the United States through southern California and Arizona. They are presented in a table format. An additional 15 beetle families were recorded without further taxonomic determinations during this same three-year study period. Stored-food products are attractive substrates for a wide variety of insect pests. Studies conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Los Angeles show that the beetles are often the predominant pests of storedfood products (Olsen 1981; Olsen et al. 1987). Little information is available concerning the diversity of the beetle species occurring in the stored-food products imported into the United States from foreign countries or concerning which food substrates are attractive to different species of stored-product Coleoptera. This study was performed to determine the scope and diversity of beetle pests found in imported foods entering the United States through ports in southern California and Arizona. The results show a diversity of occurrence of stored-food product Coleoptera and will assist coleopterists in understanding the life histories and zoogeography of these economically important pests. MATERIALS AND METHODS During a three-year study period from December 1984 through December 1987, the Los Angeles district laboratory of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration examined 3,381 imported food samples from around the world for adulteration by stored-product insects and/or other adulterants. These samples were collected at the major ports of entry into southern California including airports, harbors, and the California-Arizona and Mexico international border. The data obtained from these samples based on identifications of whole specimens to fragments indicated that Coleoptera were the most prevalent group of insects found adulterating the imported foods during this study period. Intact Coleoptera were recovered from 425 different imported food samples which originated from 19 different countries. Species level determinations were possible for a total of 63 taxa in 42 different genera from 17 beetle families. An additional six taxa identified only to genus were confirmed and 15 additional ' Present address: U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 900 Madison Avenue, Baltimore, MD 2120 1," @default.
