- W65528563 abstract "Anchihaline (or anchialine) habitats are water bodies in hollows along the sea coasts where the influence of the sea may be felt and which are inhabited by some subterranean species. They are developed in karstified or volcanic rocks and may be accessible through caves or through open rock pools. The first faunal and taxonomic data were obtained mainly from tropical Atlantic coasts in the nineteenth century. The first ecological investigations were done in the Adriatic (Mediterranean) in 1960s. The water bodies are mostly stratified in salinity, in extreme cases with a freshwater upper and euhaline bottom layers, with a strong halocline somewhere in-between. The density differences prevent mixing of layers, causing a strong deficit or even absence of oxygen in deeper layers. Crustacea are the richest animal group. The highly plesiomorphic Remipedia are limited to anchihaline waters, mainly found in the disoxic layers. For Thermosbaenacea and amphipod Hadziidae this is the prevalent habitat. It is nearly the only (semi)marine habitat for the large freshwater shrimp family Atyidae. Anchihaline habitats are endangered by urbanization of coasts and particularly by development of tourist capacities." @default.
