- W655354857 abstract "Students with Learning Disabilities often have difficulty with tasks that involve written expression. This study investigated whether the use of computer software equipped with word prediction and auditory feedback would help students to improve six aspects of their writing. Word prediction software uses the context of a sentence and the letters that have been typed to try to determine and predict what word a student is trying to type. This process can provide students with both spelling assistance and keystroke reduction. Speech feedback is the ability for software to read aloud work that has been previously typed. Six 7$sp{rm th}$ grade students with learning disabilities, all served in the same general education classroom, participated in the study for 4 $1over2$ months. These participants (4 boys, 2 girls) worked together in the computer lab each morning to use, first word processing alone, and then the intervention software for daily journal entries. A Multiple Baseline across Subjects design allowed the students to begin the intervention phase in a staggered manner. Co:Writer and Write:OutLoud were used in combination as the intervention software. Results indicated that using these programs significantly increased the length of student writing samples as well as the ability for the students to work independently. Students also scored significantly higher on a holistic rating of their work with pencil and paper after using the intervention software, and reported having less anxiety about writing. However, writing samples taken during the intervention phase did not score significantly higher on a holistic ranking than those taken during intervention, nor did they contain a larger repertoire of words. Many of the results of this study are very encouraging. However, more research must be done to better understand the most appropriate and effective uses of these tools with adolescents with Learning Disabilities." @default.
