- W655565585 abstract "This paper shows the influence that the use of different types of water-reducing admixtures in concrete with microsilica, exerts on two important characteristics of concrete: its mechanical strength and its chemical resistance, reflected by the greater or lesser resistance against aggressive chemical attack. Results obtained show that the introduction of microsilica (MS) improves the resistances, but that when a water-reducing agent is also added, the increase in mechanical strengths is much greater. Thus, the carboxylic derivative-modified lignosulphonate based admixture is the one that originates a greater increase in resistances and strengths, as, besides its excellent water-reducing power, it provides a more stable structure in the concrete. The carboxylic polymer-based admixture is the best water-reducing agent (the best dispersing agent) and it also produces a strong increase in resistances. The presence of MS in the concrete produces a notable diminishing of the capillary porosity of same, thus hindering the penetration of aggressive fluids and resulting in a considerable increase in the resistance of the concrete against chemical attack. For the same reason as the diminishing or porosity (or increase in closeness), the admixtures producing a lesser water/cement ratio, are also those that improve attack resistance.
