- W655903672 abstract "The UK rail industry is facing a critical shortage of highly skilled employees, such as engineers and economists. This article examines this shortage and provides some ideas on how the rail industry can fill the gaps. Recent research has shown that a minimum of 30-40% additional qualified transportation professionals are needed to complete existing projects. This number does not take into account the additional support needed for new projects. One important strategy is to source talent for other countries. An international recruitment project should always be paired with programs to ensure that new employees from overseas integrate smoothly into their new culture and working environment. Cross-skilling offers another solution, in which staff with transferable skills are pulled from areas of the business where there is a skill surplus, or from other sectors and industries. The key to delivering a successful cross-skilling program is to specifically define the core competencies needed within the transferable skills. Attracting skilled workers from either overseas or from other sectors or industries requires effective marketing. A recent survey showed that people in the construction and engineering sectors cite salary, an ability to work on different projects, promotion prospects, job benefits and job location as the most important factors in switching jobs. Marketing strategies should highlight these factors in order to attract new employees to the rail sector." @default.
