- W65641104 abstract "Molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC) have shown great potential as a second generation fuel cell power conversion technology. EPRI, GRI, and the US Department of Energy are supporting R D efforts to hasten the commercialization of this technology. Research funding is being focused on MCFC design improvements and manufacturing cost reductions to lower total system costs and improve the cost per kwh of electricity from its present state. These cost reductions are expected to be driven by technological improvements in fuel cell power plant components and manufacturing process developments. The objectives of this study were: To provide an independent assessment and evaluation of the achievability of the projected manufacturing costs for molten carbonate fuel cells as reported by three US developers . 2. To suggest any improvements in the fuel cell manufacturing approaches as described by the developers that could lead to further fuel cell cost reductions. Manufacturing methods, technologies, and costs were evaluated for compatibility with commercial scale manufacturing of units in a high volume production scenario. Each major component of a proposed molten carbonate fuel cell stack was analyzed for potential improvements in design and manufacturability.
