- W656695922 abstract "This work follows on form the RATM trip distribution investigation conducted by the Institute for Transport Studies and from more recent research into error estimation for the Department of Transport. Both roadside and household interviewing are expensive ways of collecting the information necessary to calibrate a trip distribution model. It is well known that stratification leads to more efficient designs and that it is possible to apportion survey effort to maximise precision for a given budget. Incorporating this idea into the design of a trip distribution survey raises interesting issues. Most sample surveys use their data for direct estimates of quantities of interest, such as a population means or proportions, and these quantities are unrelated. On the other hand trip distribution studies collect data to calibrate a gravity model or a version of it. The existence of an underlying model enables increased efficiency and allowance for the possibility of a mis-specified or ill fitting gravity model leads to designs which compromise between bias and efficiency. This is particularly apparent when the final estimate of a trip matrix can be expressed as combinations of original data and modelled flows. Practical applications of those designs require some preliminary estimates of the parameters. Numerical illustrations of the techniques are given. (Author/TRRL)" @default.
