- W656996885 abstract "This book challenges the view, widely agreed since the nineteenth century, that Deuteronomy, at least in an original, shorter form, was the ‘book of the law’ which 2 Kings 22–3 describes as the basis of King Josiah’s cultic reformation in 621 BCE. Of special significance for this view has been the notice in this narrative that Josiah abolished the local neighbourhood altars throughout his kingdom and centralized the national cult in Jerusalem, where, it is also commonly agreed, the priests of these rural shrines were relocated. A re-examination of this notice reveals, however, that it rests upon a misreading of the text. It is further argued that this notice is probably a secondary insertion into this narrative which originally knew nothing of a centralization of the cult, as required by Deuteronomy. Rather, the view is here argued that Deuteronomy was largely a product of thinkers and writers who lived among the Judaean exiles in Babylonia in the sixth century, and that it represents in a number of significant ways a break with pre-exilic Israelite religion and confronts the challenges of life and cultural survival as a Diaspora. Leading features of the book such as its zealous monolatry, its self-presentation as ‘the book of the torah’, as ‘scripture’, its concept of the relationship with God as a matter of choice, that is, a covenant, its fear of religious encroachment, its character as ‘oppositional’ literature―these and other prominent themes of the book suggest such a provenance." @default.
