- W657575947 abstract "In order to make street areas more conducive for walking there remains a need to identify which features affect the accessibility, safety and attractiveness of walking environments for all pedestrian groups. Unfortunately, the needs of more ‘vulnerable pedestrian groups’ are poorly understood, and consequently rarely assessed beyond their most immediate, ergonomic requirements. An adapted form of ‘gap analysis’ was used to identify the main sources of ‘dissatisfaction’ for elderly respondents, both able-bodied and those experiencing various impairments affecting their walking abilities, parents of young children and a control group of able-bodied young adults, for two city centre street locations: Princes Street and The Royal Mile. Respondents were also asked to indicate which (if any) improvements would encourage them to walk more often on each of the street locations. In this and in other studies the modified gap analysis has been applied to a variety of urban street locations and successfully identified the main sources of dissatisfaction for a range of pedestrians groups. More importantly, respondents indicted that they would walk more often on each of the street locations if the sources of dissatisfaction identified via this methodology were removed, or improvements made." @default.
