- W657698169 abstract "Various types of creep test apparatus used by thirteen laboratories have been compared in a European interlaboratory study of creep testing. Two standard testing procedures were practised, one recommended by the eidgenoessische technische hochschule, zuerich (iseth) and one by koninklijke/shell-laboratorium, Amsterdam. This paper presents the creep test figures collected for asphalt samples centrally produced and distributed to the participating laboratories in series of six. Much attention is paid to a statistical analysis of the creep test values with respect to the variation within series of six specimens, the variation between the two recommended test procedures and the variation among different apparatuses and participants using the same testing procedure. Measures of repeatability have been deduced from the analysis. The study clearly demonstrates that the type of creep test apparatus used, and the test procedure applied have a significant effect on the outcome of a test. Some types of creep testers consistently give relatively low values for resistance to creep deformation and some types give relatively high values, with a maximum deviation of a factor 1.86. Furthermore, creep test results obtained according to the iseth-zuerich recommended test procedure or according to the shell recommended test procedure consistently differed by 13% on average, with the lower resistance to creep deformation found using the iseth-zuerich recommendation. When series of six samples were tested on the same apparatus or on apparatuses of the same type there was no (statistically) significant difference between the (averaged) results. The results of this study prove that the effect of the type of creep tester and of the test procedure applied must be duly considered when the creep test is used for pavement design purposes. In line with this it is proposed to interpret the iseth-zuerich recommended test procedure more strictly.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173." @default.
