- W65785377 abstract "SummaryVisual literacy, television literacy, and computer literacy have much in common, even though they retain their unique identities. In each case, the respective literacies begin to overlap computer literacy because computers are such a pervasive technology. Hence, microcomputers with powerful visual processing capabilities and languages permit us to create, manipulate, and communicate ideas in a visual form. They even enable us to think about and solve problems visually. In each case, many specific skills are involved that let us do things we could not do before. Overall, however, the price for this overlapping of computer literacy and visual literacy is a narrowing of the visual sign-vehicle to computable symbols and a restriction of visual thinking (with its rich aspects of intuitive images and metaphors, etc.) to visual information processing.
