- W658575671 abstract "To examine the relationship between levels of Lipoprotein (a) (Lp (a) ) and perforating artery occlusion type of cerebral infarction (CI) in diabetic patients, we investigated the serum levels of Lp (a) of 106 diabetic patients with CI and 168 diabetic patients without CI. The diagnosis of CI was confirmed by Computed Tomography. Patients were divided into three groups; group A (diabetes mellitus (DM) only), group B (DM with either hypertension or hyperlipidemia), group C (DM with both hypertension and hyperlipidemia). Lp (a) concentration ≥20mg/dl were identified as elevated Lp (a) levels and Lp (a) concentration <20mg/dl were identified as normal Lp (a) levels. We performed multiple logistic regression analysis to define CI as the dependent variable. Age, duration of diabetes, Lp (a), HbA1C, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and smoking index were the independent variables. In normal Lp (a) levelspatients, the frequency of CI increased significantly with increased risk factors (22.4, 41.1 and 51.6% in A, B, C groups (P<0.01) ). In elevated Lp (a) levels patients, the frequency of CI also increased significantly with increased risk factors (31.6, 42.9 and 62.1% in A, B, C groups (P<0.05) ). In all three (A, B and C) groups, the frequency of CI was not different between the normal Lp (a) levels and elevated Lp (a) levels patients. On multiple logistic regression analysis, age, duration of diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia were independent risk factors for CI. These results provide no evidence of a contribution of Lp (a) to the increased risk for the perforating artery occlusion type of cerebral infarction in diabetic patients." @default.
