- W658880545 abstract "This brief article describes the design and construction of the Veitschoechheim viaduct, which is a concrete arch bridge with a 162m main span. The 1262m long prestressed concrete box girder was incrementally launched, the longest launch that has ever been done. After launching, the girder was made discontinuous at piers 5, 10, 14 and 17, thus dividing it into 5 parts. This allows the superstructure to be replaced in 5 shorter pieces should this ever become necessary. There is a force coupler over piers 5, 10 and 17, and an expansion joint over pier 14. The bridge has 2 fixed points where longitudinal forces can be transmitted to the ground. These are: a) at the crest of the arch, where longitudinal forces acting on the superstructure from axis 0 to 14 can be transmitted; and b) at piers 16, 17 and 18, where the longitudinal forces acting on the superstructure from axis 14 to 23 can be transmitted. There are rail expansion joints in axis 0, 14 and 23. The bridge was built by free cantilevering with the aid of auxiliary cables anchored in precast concrete auxiliary towers. The arch was made of solid concrete 1.8 to 1.5m thick at the crest. The fresh concrete for this was chilled to 10 degrees C by liquid nitrogen in order to increase its strength from 55 to 65 N per square mm. The reinforcement of the arch consisted of Dywidag bars with a rolled thread (not prestressed). The French title of this article is: Viaduc de Veitshoechheim: un pont en arc de 162 m d'ouverture.
