- W65891641 abstract "To understand the picture of Yugoslavia we must first see in a correct perspective the structure of that country. I have served there in Tito's days. Marshal Tito himself was a legendary figure. To understand the background, I must first mention to you that Yugoslavia is a country with seven frontiers, six autonomous republics, five nationalities, four languages, three religions and two alphabets. There are different units of the confederation and if you look at the map you will see that up in the north is Slovenia. It is a developed region and its people are hard-working by any standard. They are very much Europeanised and they generate a good deal of resources for the country's economy. They have a common border with Austria and they are considered to be a European country now. At that time they felt that they were different from the people of other republics of the then Yugoslavia and that is why the other republics felt that Slovenia was following a lonely road, nobody came near them. The next republic is Croatia. Croatian people consider themselves to be fairly akin and closer to Slovenia. Zagreb was the capital, a very beautiful city, and as soon you go further you see that you have to cross the border. The next country is Austria. We used to go frequently to Austria. I was talking about Croatia, Tito himself was a Croat, and as such he had a soft corner for that republic. I must also mention, he was a half Croat and half Slovene as his mother was Slovene. So he was able to strike a balance between the two republics and whenever a warlike situation existed between the two he always intervened and saw to it that both the republics and their leaders kept quiet and toed the line which was formulated by Marshal Tito himself." @default.
