- W659318053 abstract "Emerging technology has had the greatest impact on access to information for the marginalized disabled people. While many countries have passed legislations to accommodate the growing need of this segment of the population, there is still a need to provide information on accessible services and levels of accessibility available for the disabled travelers to unfamiliar locations. The research addresses the need to provide detailed information for the disabled traveler in an easily accessible form, and to accommodate the needs of different disabilities (hearing impaired, visually impaired, and the mobility impaired). The research focuses on designing an appropriate database for the disabled using global positioning system (GPS), and geographic information systems (GIS), and making the information available through the internet, thus allowing the disabled individuals and their escorts to plan their trips more effectively, regardless of their origin, destinations and their mode of travel. Using selected sites; a sample database is proposed for the disabled tourist visiting the Houston area, identifying the level of accessibility available for each major type of disability. The feasibility of accessing such data from any location in any country via the Internet is proposed through the use of ArcIMS to display a map and the data." @default.
