- W659502707 abstract "Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) are often a serious complication of polypharmacy. This is especially common in the people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The consequences of drug interactions vary, ranging from drug toxicities to outright therapeutic failures. A prospective study was conducted with an objective to assess the prevalence of possible DDIs in HIV patients. The prescriptions of 72 enrolled inpatients were analyzed for possible DDIs by using Stockley’s Drug Interactions, Micromedex Online Drug Reference the Complete Drug Reference and other relevant resources. The Possible DDIs found were classified as described by Tatro. Out of 72 enrolled patients 63 patients were with DDIs and 9 patients were without DDIs.There were 52.77% males and 47.23% females, and majority of patients 58.33% were in the age group of 31 to 45 years, 68.05% patients were having CD4 counts <200. A total of 337 DDIs were identified. Among them 50.74% DDIs were due to interactions between others with others(The drugs used to treat opportunistic infections and other co-morbidities in HIV Patients other than antiretroviral drugs), 49.25% DDIs were due to interactions between anti retro viral therapy (ARTs with others and there were no DDIs reported due to interaction between ART with ART. The classification of DDIs based on pharmacology reveals that there were more number of Pharmacokinetic DDIs 75.37%, based on severity there were more number of moderate DDIs 51.33% followed by minor 27.01% and major 21.66% DDIs and based on onset there were more number of delayed DDIs 72.4%. Major DDIs are due to interactions between ART withother ie,. Neviripine with fluconazole (12) and other with others ie,. Fluconazole with cotrimoxazole (10). The study revealed that there were more number of DDIs at study site. These interactions may lead to therapeutic failure, increase hospital admissions and cost of therapy. This highlights the need of conducting the educational programs for the prescribers to minimize them." @default.
