- W66057105 abstract "The lattice spacings of twenty two cubic Laves phases of the MgCu2 type formed by rare-earth metals with aluminium and cobalt have been measured and are discussed. Hardness and magnetic susceptibility results for the R.E.Al2 series are also presented. In CeAl2 cerium adopts an effective atomic diameter consistent with an effective valency of 3, while in CeCo2 the effective valency is nearer 4. This variable behaviour is analogous to that previously observed in solid solutions and intermediate phases containing cerium, and may be interpreted in terms of the opposing tendencies for cerium to change its effective valency towards that of its partner, and to contract by ionisation to a higher valency state when subjected to compression. In the Laves phases studied, of formula AB2, compressive stresses are exerted on the atoms of the A sublattice by the B sublattice when the ratio r of the atomic diameter of A to that of B exceeds 1.225. Comparison of a number of Laves phases containing cerium suggests that the transition of electrons from the 4ƒ levels to the conduction band occurs only for r values exceeding 1.345. The lattice spacing of the GdCo2 phase, which is thought to be ferrimagnetic, is abnormally high; this is discussed in terms of magnetic interactions, the elimination of which appears to lead to a contraction of the atomic diameter of gadolinium." @default.
