- W66295004 abstract "Although the plight of homeless Americans can be traced back to the depression era of the 1930s, it has only recently begun to draw national attention as a major social issue (Mills & Ota, 1989). Much of the reason the problem of homelessness has gained attention in the past few years is tied to an increasing awareness that families with children represent the fastestgrowing group of homeless persons in the 1990s (Children's Defense Fund, 1988; Moynihan, 1986). Although the exact number of homeless people is difficult to calculate, current estimates suggest that there are about 2.5 million people unable to secure housing at any given time in the United States (Bassuk & Rosenberg, 1990; Mills & Ota, 1989). Studies involving these children indicate that they come from lowto middle-socioeconomic strata and all racial and ethnic groups (Kufeldt & Nimmo, 1987; Shaffer & Caton, 1984). Shane (1989) underscored the point that most homeless children come from female-headed, single-parent, or reconstituted families in which there are multiple siblings. A sizeable number of these youngsters attend elementary schools. Given the obvious instability of their living situations, many of them are likely to demonstrate greater transience from one school to another compared with other children their age, as well as to manifest recurring problems related to school attendance and tardiness (Eddowes & Hranitz, 1989). In spite of these practical difficulties, homeless children find a reprieve from the frightening realities of wandering the streets by going to school. For many, attending school provides a sense of being normal that inevitably eludes them when, at the end of the school day, they are forced to seek temporary shelter with their family somewhere in the city. Practically speaking, the benefit of having a number of their basic needs met as a" @default.
