- W66416938 abstract "ABSTRACT Natural gas fuelling for heavy-duty on-road vehicles offers substantial environmental and economic benefits. Developing a natural gas engine for high performance and high efficiency while meeting stringent emissions regulations remains a challenge. This paper reports on the development of increased power variants of a 15 L heavy duty natural gas fuelled engine for two distinct markets: Australia, with relatively relaxed emissions regulations, and North America, with more stringent emissions standards. In both cases, Westport's standard 15 L HD HPDI natural gas engine was used as a starting point. The Australia development aimed for 465 kW while the North American targeted 390 kW; the original version was rated up to 356 kW. The lower NOx emissions from natural gas combustion allowed the Australia engine to achieve a peak brake thermal efficiency in excess of 44%, enabling tank-to-wheels greenhouse gas emissions approximately 23% below an equivalent diesel. To meet North American EPA 2010 standards, the engine calibration and compression ratio were changed. Peak efficiencies in excess of 42% were still achieved, with GHG emissions substantially below those of an equivalent diesel engine.
