- W66428619 abstract "At the very heart of our ambition as civil societyorganisations is a commitment and belief that a moreequitable, just and inclusive Ireland is possible. Themembers of the Community Platform are motivatedby a vision for Ireland in which development means anincreasingly fair society, and in which democracy is definedby participation, engagement and pluralism. The civil society organisations that comprise the CommunityPlatform share a commitment to creating a more just andequal society, as well as the capacity to generate alternativesolutions. We recognise that we have a responsibility todrive and to contribute to the emerging debate on thenature of Irish society and democracy, which moves beyondcurrent realities to foster genuinely creative responses tonew and intransigent socio-economic challenges. The Community Platform commissioned Dr Mary Murphyand Professor Peadar Kirby to write this paper to informthis process. We asked the authors to critically examineexisting models of development and responses to exclusionand inequality, assessing progress to date, and to presenttheir analysis of alternative models of development thatIreland could draw on. They have succeeded in presenting apaper that poses many challenges and raises questions foreveryone concerned with anti-poverty, social inclusion andequality in Ireland. The paper explores the Irish economic success story thathas dominated debate over the last decade, assesses thelevel of inequality that it has left in its wake, and speculatesabout the general acceptance of this disparity. It raisesquestions about the sustainability and values that underpinthat model of economic development in Ireland. The paperaddresses the role of civil society, from the perspective ofhow it engages with the state, how the state has sought todefine that relationship, and the implications this has forcivil society organisations. It interrogates the role of thestate and the commonly held impression of a benign andcapable state committed to a project of national economicand social development. Murphy and Kirby point out thatthose driven to ensure that the market and market friendlypolicies are an end in themselves rather than a means, havewon hands down the battle for ideas in Ireland.of an alternative, more sustainable and equitable modelof development. Drawing on international practice andoutlining a number of alternative models of developmentthe authors seek to stimulate discussion about a morejust and equitable model of development. Perhaps mostimportantly, they prompt us to begin to consider thevalues that should inform any future sustainable model ofdevelopment. Never has this challenge been more urgent,as governments all over Europe and the world move toprivatise profit and socialise loss. What the world is nowwitnessing is much more than limited market failure, whatwe are seeing is the systemic collapse of market capitalism, and in particular financial capitalism. These realities haveimplications for Ireland’s development model, and in thewake of Budget 2009 this paper seeks to contribute toarticulating a ‘better Ireland’.Everyday members of the Community Platform work for andwith children, women and men for whom the challenge ofvoicing an alternative vision for Ireland is not a theoreticalluxury, but a very real, practical and urgent necessity. This paper concludes that a better Ireland is possible andasks us all to step up to the challenge of ensuring that itbecomes a reality. In a mature democracy - one that valuespluralism, diversity and governance - everyone has theright to participate in generating an alternative vision, andeveryone shares the responsibility in ensuring we succeed." @default.
