- W66500872 abstract "One of the most important developments in the Arab Middle East since the end of the second World War can be described as the emasculation of the Arab bourgeoisie. It has occurred in the most influential and advanced Arab countries, with the exception of the Lebanon, but not yet in those which are more bound by tradition. The development in Egypt was somewhat different from that in Iraq and in Syria, no doubt because of the special centralized characteristics and traditions of Egypt which strongly differentiate the Nile valley and delta from the other Arab countries of this region. In speaking of the collapse of the bourgeoisie we mean not only the fall from power of people belonging to a certain class but, coupled with it, the collapse of a particular political concept which could, with a little stretching, be described as liberal, and its replacement by one which claims to be 'socialist' or indeed 'scientifically socialist'. The countries where the liberal outlook became discredited turned away from Europe and America, the western world, and towards the communist countries, developing a growing interest in their ideology and their methods of organization, and seeking collaboration with them. Can we explain why the bourgeoisie, the exponent of liberal ideas, had to surrender its power and make way in the key Arab countries for a new ruling class, petty-bourgeois in origin but military in character and socialist in inclination ? What exactly was this bourgeoisie ? What were its weaknesses ? Why was it weak ? Under what portents did it fall from power ? These are some of the questions which spring to mind when we try to explain the change that has taken place. The development which is of interest to us has taken place in Syria, Iraq, and Egypt. It has not happened in the Lebanon, in Jordan, nor in Saudi Arabia; it was reversed in the Sudan, if it did" @default.
