- W66848045 abstract "The authors use image analysis to study the relations between microcracking and shear-fracture development in granite. The sample studied is a cylinder of Westerly granite 7.8 cm in diameter and 19.5 cm long that was used in an acoustic emission experiment at 50 MPa confining pressure. Granite located well in front and to the side of the fracture tip (far field) contains about 14.5 mm of crack length per unit area of granite, which is nearly twice the crack density of the starting material (7.5 mm/mm[sup 2]). This far-field value represents the background crack density in the stressed sample. Crack densities increase markedly in the near field: they are roughly 3 times the far-field value directly in front of the fracture and more than 6 times the far-field value in a 0.1 mm-wide band across the fracture near its termination. The near-field area can be separated into dilational and compressional zones, and the preferred orientation of the microcracks is consistent with their growth into or towards the dilational zone. Crack densities are also 20--30% greater in the dilational zone than in the compressional zone. Although the microcracks trend away from the propagation direction of the fracture, they are incorporated intomore » the path of the growing shear to a significant degree. As a result, the 40--50 mm length of fracture immediately behind the tip has a pronounced sawtooth-segmentation pattern. Farther back from the tip, gouge formation accompanying increasing offset smooths the fault to some extent, but even here it retains a clearly segmented character. Thus, at least at small scales, geometric segmentation of a propagating fault is an inevitable product of the stresses in the near field and their influence on cracking patterns. Many youthful strike-slip faults also have a sawtooth geometry that could be the result of similar processes.« less" @default.
