Shortly before, I had read the memoirs of Albert Speer, and, on my trip to Germany, I sought out traces, not only of Holderlin, Hegel, Kleist or Fontane, but also of the Third Reich. More precisely: traces of Speer's vision of the architecture of man, which Hitler not only blindly trusted, but with whom (Speer) he also shared his passionate interest in architecture. Together they dreamed up a new Berlin: the new Palace of Congress, beneath whose dome perhaps even the Eiffel Tower was to have found a place; and the Reichs Chancellery, to which they themselves wanted to offer what they considered to be the naturally long-destined Potsdam Square. Together they brooded over future city plans, and Hitler even succeeded in having the somewhat skeptical architect agree to his plan to expand Augsburg into the largest city in Southern Germany, and to link Munich to her merely as a suburb. Hitler also assigned the plan ning for the marching grounds for Munich's Reich Party Days festivi ties to the merely 28-year-old architect, who, as a result, conjured up a further new dream world just next to the medieval-reminiscent dream city.
