- W66940329 abstract "When New Zealand was discovered by European man it was inhabited by Polynesian peoples who had occupied the country for at least 600 years. As a land mass the New Zealand islands had been geologically isolated from the rest of the world over the entire tertiary geological era. During this time New Zealand was surrounded by extensive seas and only occasional migrants, such as wandering birds, marine animals and occasional plants reached this country from outside areas. Globally the tertiary era was the age of mammals and flowering plants but during this period of isolation few of these species from the outside world became established in New Zealand. Those, however, that did reach New Zealand were able to evolve and spread without challenge by new arrivals. Many plants developed new characteristics, or, new species especially suited to the New Zealand environment were evolved. This environment embraced zones that varied from warm humid regions through exposed wind swept plateaus to alpine fell-fields, all of which became densely populated with a luxuriant plant cover. This contained some genera which gave rise to large numbers of species, often with peculiar adapted forms and structures, as for instance in Hebe and Coprosma. Plant com-munities evolved unique to New Zealand and outstanding amongst these were the kauri forests of the North Island, the beech forests of the South Island, the dense shrubby undergrowth and epiphytes of the podocarp forests, the cushion plant formations of the high alpine regions, the sub- alpine and alpine tussock lands and herb fields, and the ferns." @default.
