- W66983095 abstract "There has been a steady increase in the amount of information available on the digestive physiology of herbivores such as sloths, porcupines, and kangaroos. Evolution of the artiodactyl, of equid and ruminant digestive strategies, and of microbial digestion in mammals is discussed in the chapter. Chemical reactor theory has proved to be applicable to digestion in mammalian herbivores. Such application has helped in simplifying the complex array of mammalian digestive systems by relating gut structure to patterns of digesta flow and digestion in foregut and hindgut fermenters across a wide range of body sizes. The relative advantages and disadvantages of ruminants versus other types of mammalian herbivores, both foregut and hindgut fermenters, at the two extremes of forage quality, are also easy to understand on the basis of chemical reactor theory." @default.
