- W6699435 abstract "Mineralogical and textural evidence indicates that the basalticachondrites originated in one or more magmatic episodes in avariety of cooling environments that resulted in textures rangingfrom gabbroic to diabasic. Chemical compositional and mineralogicalvariations are consistent with a common origin for the basalticachondrites by magmatic differentiation. The characteristics ofthe mineralogical, major element and trace element variations aresimilar to those of the Skaergaard intrusion, but the basalticachondrite magmas started from different compositions and crystallizedunder much lower partial pressures of oxygen(in the stabilityfield of metallic iron) than did the magmas of the Skaergaardintrusion. The differentiation trends shown by the basaltic achondritesindicate that the starting material had calcic plagioclaseand was depleted in alkalis with respect to chondritic meteorites,in which the plagioclase is sodic. Brecciation is a conspicuous feature of most basaltic achondrites,which can be most satisfactorily subgrouped on the basis ofbreccia type as brecciated eucrites (monomict breccias), eucrites(unbrecciated), and howardites (polymict breccias). Petrographicevidence suggests that some textural metamorphism and brecciation wereproduced by shock effects that accompanied impact events on the surfaceof the parent body. The abundances of basaltic achondrite falls areconsistent with a surface-sampling mechanism such as meteorite impactejection. A preponderance of near-surface samples and the distinctdifferences between the basaltic achondrites and chondrites suggestthat the moon is the probable parent body of the basaltic achondrites." @default.
