- W67100405 abstract "Background: Pain is a phenomenon with many dimensions and several factors with a profound psychological impact. Anxiety and depression can increase the experience of pain. With cancer patients, it is common for pain, anxiety and depression to exist simultaneously and to exacerbate each other mutually. The general aim defined for this study was to investigate the differences in the intensity levels of pain, anxiety and depression in cancer patients receiving outpatient treatment at the IPO Porto Pain Clinic. Method: Descriptive cross-sectional study using the Mental Health Inventory (MHI), adaptation to the Portuguese population by Pais Ribeiro in 2001, to determine the levels of anxiety and depression. The Qualitative Pain Scale was used to measure pain intensity. The sample used in this study consisted of 53 patients suffering from cancer, 51% men and 49% women, aged between 22 and 88. The average age was 59. Results: Based on the data obtained, the patients in this study showed moderate levels of pain, anxiety and depression. Pain intensity established a statistically significant relationship with professional status (p=0.001), the existence of metastases (p=0.008), analgesic medication (p=0.044), anxiety level (p=0.004) and level of depression (p=0.012). However, the multivariate analysis carried out by linear regression showed that all p values were higher than 0.05 and therefore not significant. Apart from pain intensity, the level of depression did not show significant association with any other variable. The anxiety level established a significant relationship between pain intensity and gender; no significant association was established between the remaining socio-demographic and cancer variables. Conclusion: Although the bivariate analysis showed an association between pain, level of anxiety and level of depression, the data generated by this study was inconclusive in interpreting the relationship existing between these variables. Therefore, other studies with a larger sample size and with other variables may be able to make a positive contribution to describing the relationship." @default.
