- W67107410 abstract "Rat and mouse α1-fetoproteins (AFP) bind natural estrogens with high affinity and specificity, whereas AFP's from other species, including human AFP do not. The biological role of the rodent estrophilic AFP's is not yet understood. The observation that the AFP's are present during a period of intensive cellular multiplication, sexual differentiation and maturation has served as a basis for experimental approaches and working hypotheses. The target organs and functions of estrogens have also been considered. Studies of the hormonal environment of the estrophilic AFP's during development and in tumors which produce AFP have led to the discovery, in rat and mouse sera, of one or several non-steroid lipid low molecular weight compounds acting as competitors for estrogens binding to AFP. Such endogenous competitors have been also found in human sera. Significant variations in the competitor concentrations as a function of age and physiological conditions have been demonstrated. The discovery of a physiological non-phenol steroid ligand able to modulate the estrogen-AFP interactions emphasizes the probable complexity of the role of fetal protein in the control of extracellular and intracellular hormone levels." @default.
