- W67123458 abstract "It is a commonly-held view that growth substances act pivotally in plant growth and development. The effects of exogenously-added growth substances and biosynthesis mutants represent the main experimental support for such a notion. The thesis of this article is that instead, growth substances are sensitive controllers of development only under certain discrete circumstances. These conditions, which are characteristically poor for growth, are characterised by specific imbalance(s) (starvation) for particular resources; they lead to phenotypic and developmental plasticity. In poor growth conditions the competition for resources between the growing tissues or between polarities of growth or specific metabolic processes is intensified; those which incorporate the extra stimulus of a growth substance survive the competitive conditions more effectively. As a result the balance of developmental processes is altered and growing tissues may become thinner or thicker, the result of coupling of one or other growth polarities to a growth substance. In well-nourished plants specific tissues acquire the capability to synthesise growth substances and sensitivity to specific growth substances ontogenetically. But in these well-nourished conditions the contribution of the growth substance to growth or other acts of development is essential but insensitive and therefore not controlling. It may be possible to associate specific growth substances with specific resource starvation. Thus auxin and gibberellin may be associated with carbohydrate and amino acid and starvation in etiolated and green plants respectively, cytokinin with nitrogen starvation, abscisic acid with water and ethylene with ATP (O2) starvation." @default.
