- W67202590 abstract "Calcium (Ca2+) ions serve a large variety of intra-and extracellular roles (1,2). Cytosolic free calcium ions (Cai) are a key intracellular second messenger and cofactor for enzymes (2,3). Ca2+ i controls diverse cellular functions, such as muscular contraction, glycogen metabolism, secretion, cellular motility, and proliferation (2). Basal levels of Cai are maintained at ∼100 nM, which is nearly four orders of magnitude lower than the extracellular ionized calcium concentration (Ca2+ o) (∼1 mM). During cellular activation and intracellular signaling, Ca2+ i can undergo large fluctuations as a result of release of Ca2+ from its intracellular stores and/or uptake of extracellular Ca2+ through various Ca2+-permeable influx pathways in the plasma membrane. Ca2+ o, in contrast, remains virtually invariant, varying over a range of only a few percent under normal circumstances (1,4–6). Extracellular calcium ions are also essential for numerous critical functions, such as promoting skeletal integrity, clotting of the blood, and controlling neuromuscular excitability." @default.
