- W67204842 abstract "Both serum creatinine and measuring GFR can be used to evaluate renal function in dogs suspected to have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Although high creatinine levels usually indicate renal disease, normal creatinine levels can be present in dogs with decreased renal filtration. Measuring GFR is generally believed to be the most accurate way of detecting decreased renal filtration and scintigraphy GFR using 99mTc-DTPA has been found to correlate well with the ‘gold standard’ inulin clearance method. When measuring GFR by scintigraphy, 99mTc-DTPA is injected intravenously and radioactive decay of technetium gives rise to gamma radiation, which is registered by a gamma camera. Pictures and curves of radioactivity in the kidneys are generated by means of a computer program. Calculation of GFR can be performed by two methods; by the integral method, where GFR is presented as ml/kg/min and the plasma method, where GFR is presented as ml/L/min.In this study, the GFR measured by scintigraphy was compared with the serum creatinine concentration in 23 dogs with suspected CKD. GFR was calculated with integral and plasma methods by a radiologist and a veterinary student. The results confirmed that a normal creatinine value does not necessarily indicate normal filtration by the kidneys. In addition, the study illustrated that dogs with moderate to severe decreased kidney function could have a normal concentration of serum creatinine and that the creatinine value among these dogs showed no tendency of being high within the reference value. The study also showed the advantage of measuring one kidney’s function at a time, which is possible only by GFR scintigraphy. @default.
