- W67249002 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter explains the process of vestigialization of metazoan structures. The loss of a structure after it becomes unnecessary is related to the evolutionary disadvantage that the cost of maintaining that structure represents. Loss of function precedes the loss of structure used to perform that function. Behavior is the most plastic component of animal phenotype. This chapter begins with describing the phenomenon of vestigialization of limbs in squamates. Following this, it describes loss of animal structures in nature, such as loss of wings in insects and plasmids, loss of gallbladder in fish, teeth in birds, tetrapod limbs, and limbs in amphibians and reptiles. It also takes into account the phenomenon of reduction of limbs in aquatic animals, loss of lungs in salamanders, and that of eyes in mole rats. Furthermore, it deals with loss of characters in cave dwelling animals, such as loss of eyes in Astyanax fasciatus and loss of pigmentation in cave fish. The loss of some stages in the complex life cycle of insects is also explained. Finally, the study provides an understanding of the phenomenon of loss of behaviors, using the example of loss of the acoustic startle response in moths endemic to bat-free habitats." @default.
