- W67334993 abstract "This chapter reviews game theoretic models of policy formation in multidimensional choice spaces. It discusses specifying conditions for a core and the structure of the social order in the absence of a core. The chapter discusses the symmetry conditions for a core for majority rule, which can be extended to give core symmetry conditions for arbitrary choice functions. It summarizes the implications of these symmetry conditions for generic existence or nonexistence of core points. Recent research has attempted to bring in institutional details and to define the solution concept more carefully, in conjunction with rules and communication allowed by the institution, so that equilibria exist and are well behaved. The general flavor of the conclusions of political processes depends heavily on the institutions, but it is not the case that anything can happen. Most institutional procedures that allow for any kind of endogeneity of access to the agenda result in outcomes that are centrally located, in some sense. However, even though many institutions have a centralizing tendency, there is still substantial room for the institutional details to have an effect on the policy chosen." @default.
