- W67355536 abstract "Natural killer cells (NK cells) were originally described and defined as a distinct group of cells using in vitro cytolytic assays against malignant cells (Kiessling et al. 1975a; Herberman et al. 1975b). The fact that the NK cells constitute such a recent discovery may in part be due to the previous prevailing focus in tumor immunology requiring strict specificity of an immune reaction to allow a proper interest It is now clear that NK cells are cells able to endow the individual with immune capacity, that is, to exclude the occurrence of certain diseases. However, it is equally clear that the specificity patterns expressed by NK cells are of a “broader” type than is displayed by T or B lymphocytes against conventional antigens. Still, little doubt exists that NK cells do indeed express a distinct selectivity in their lytic and binding patterns (Kiessling et al. 1975). The specific profile as to lysis is in fact one of the best accepted markers for NK cells, since natural killer cells have very few markers on their surface which define the lytic cell being studied as an NK cell (Kiessling and Wigzell 1979)." @default.
