- W67355551 abstract "With any research project, the side roads upon which you could travel are very often filled with tempting and intriguing information. So it is with my dissertation research which is focusing on the symbolic interaction of values systems between grassroots armed forces veterans and peace and justice groups in a mid-sized, northeastern city. During the course of a research interview, the subject of women who had served in Vietnam, especially as combat nurses, was raised. This led me to an examination of the literature on women's experience in and with the military and the Veterans' Administration, with special attention to material on women who had served in Vietnam. I found a disheartening dearth of information, suggesting to me that the stories of women in the military, and women as veterans are yet another example of the undocumented, invisible service of women. On the whole, the body of literature dealing with women in the military is quite small; literature on women veterans is scarcer, and writings on women's experience in Vietnam and after is very minimal, and often this is limited to essays or popular news articles. Of particular note in these resources is the scant attention given to the military and veteran experience of specific groups of women, for example, women of color and lesbians. The assumption of women's generic experience is still very much the norm in research in this area. For that reason, I include several resources I did find which expand the notion of who is serving in the military and what their particular experience is. The lack of material on women and the military is even more noticeable when compared to the vast amount of information available about male experiences of the military and the Veterans' Administration, especially as related to Vietnam and its effects. The literature that is available, and several of the pieces are excellent documentations of women's experience, can be useful as a teaching tool in introducing a relatively hidden historical area of women's lives, as well as an important contribution to the dialogue on women's role in national security and peacemaking. The bibliography is divided into two categories, Women and the Military and Women and Vietnam, and it contains material from a range of sources, including news and magazine articles, research reports and personal accounts.
