- W67429987 abstract "A gel provides both the base for adhesion and growth as well as the nutrients cells require. Studies on the functions of extracelluar matrix (ECM) molecules have begun from the findings that the RGD arrangement in fibronectin is the cellular adhesion site. Other amino acid sequences on the various ECM structure molecules have also been identified as cell adhesion sites. However, cell function formation and control that occur because the extracelluar environment is a gel cannot be sufficiently understood only from information on adhesion as influenced by the amino acid sequence. The chapter discusses the functional cell development using a gel as a cell culture basis and planting cells in or on a gel. Collagen gel, agarose gel, and matrigel, all of which are often used as cell culture bases, are described in the chapter. Gels exhibit plasticity of supramolocular structures. The higher-order structures involved in molecular associations, the packing of polymer chains, and conformation structures can provide signals to cells. Study of multicellular culture using gels will be important for understanding the formation and subsequent functional development of multicellular systems." @default.
