- W67672509 abstract "Septic shock is a syndrome characterised by vascular collapse presumed to be initiated by infection. It is the most common cause of death in intensive care units and is associated with an overall mortality rate of at least 50% (ASTIZ and RACKOW 1998). The cause of death is a combination of relentlessly progressive hypotension and multiple organ failure, and even survivors of the initial event have a relatively poor prognosis, with increased morbidity and mortality continuing for months after the acute syndrome has resolved (QUARTIN et al. 1997). In this chapter, we discuss the possible roles of nitric oxide (NO) in the pathogenesis of sepsis and its complications and consider the therapeutic potential of NO synthase (NOS) inhibitors." @default.
