- W68091696 abstract "Factors contributing to illegitimate adolescent pregnancies are examined in the hopes of providing a basis for establishing preventative and remedial approaches to the problem. Most of the information comes from previously published material. 7 nonsexual impulses which can be expressed in sexuality often leading to illegitimate pregnancy are 1) feelings of inadequacy; 2) a wish to be loved; 3) a wish to mother; 4) a wish to have a gift for the mother; 5) competition with the mother; 6) a wish to have a baby to identify with; and 7) hostility toward men. Studies indicate that somewhere along the line both the mother and father of an unwed mother have failed. Often the girls feel unloved and are not taught how to deal with and control their emotions. Many come from broken homes and have difficulty relating with other people. They appear to have a strong desire for self-punishment. The unwed mother is not usually promiscuous but her knowledge of sex and contraception often is very limited. A profile of the putative father generally does not reveal a sexual exploiter. Often he is very involved with his partner and willing to marry her. But he is immature and lacking in responsibility. He often does not have a strong masculine identity. Illegitimate pregnancies create social and financial problems to both the mother and the child. Those who give up their babies for adoption were found to be more stable intelligent and mature and to feel the stigma of illegitimacy more strongly. Many unwed mothers eventually marry the putative father; those who dont can pose serious problems related to economic support education child care and health. One way to cut down on the number of illegitimate children is to educate and provide contraceptives for girls who have already had an illegitimate pregnancy since about half of all illegitimate births are to mothers who already have 1 or amore illegitimate children." @default.
