- W68239450 abstract "The biological action of the free radical formed during the electrolysis of tyrosine ( alpha -amino BETA -oxyphenyl propionic acid) on the haploid and dipioid strains of yeast cells was investigated. A standard yeast suspension was prepared in a saturated solution of tyrosine in 5% sodium acetate, using the latter materiai primarily to increase the electrical conductivity of the system. The solution was electrolyzed at 4.5 v, using Pt electrodes, for various time periods. As the criterion of the action of the free radicals, the survival rate of the yeast cells was evaluated on the basis of the microcolonies, comparing the results with the survival rate of yeast cells exposed to 1.2 kr/min of radiation. The results showed that the free radicals exert a strong harmful effect; after 46 minutes of electrolysis, all the cells were killed. At shorter periods, the hapioid and diploid cells exhibited a differential behavior, depending on their radiosensitivity. Subsequent tests showed that vinyl pyrrolidone exerts a protective action against the tyrosine radicals. Regeneration of the cells exposed to the action of these radicals followed the pattern exhibited by cells exposed to gamma radiation.
