- W68258513 abstract "At two moments of history, centuries apart, Vamour-passion, as Stendhal named it, has left a singular manifestation in litera ture: a group of letters whose incandescence transcends artifice, testifying to a love that was overwhelming and unique. In H? lo?se's letters as in Marianne's we see the love of a woman for a man involving qualities incomparable to any expressed by or attributed to men in love. And it is men who, since the late 17th century, have spent their time and ingenuity trying to show both these collections to be forgeries, written (oh the pride, cruelty and ambition of man!) by an Abelard, a Guilleragues, or some male unknown. Amid the endless proofs and counterproofs of spuriousness, the far more important problem, that of the significance of two such series of letters, both the twelfth and the seventeenth cen tury ones, had quite eluded scholars. This is the point of depar ture of Marianne's most recent pursuivant, the distinguished phi lologist Dr. Leo Spitzer1), who also casts a glance at H?lo?se. With great detail and skill he analyses the artistic subtlety and unity of the Lettres portugaises, yet he in turn sees this as evi dence that they are merely literary, not authentic. For him art and nature, the ?feigned and the ?real, would seem to exclude each other, rhetoric and elegance would war against the sponta neous overflow of powerful feeling. This I should like to question, as also whether Dr. Spitzer has interpreted the unity and signi ficance of these letters correctly. Do they end with Marianne's being cured of her love, so that passion dies ?d'inanition senti mentale? Or is Rilke's interpretation the true one rather? Does she transform her love into something transcendent and perfect, purified of the reproaches and the suffering? Assuming that Marianne overcame her passion, Dr. Spitzer compares her with H?lo?se who, (so he would have us believe)" @default.
