- W68690508 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter introduces the zebrafish as a genetic model system, describing the characteristics that make it amenable to classical genetic analyses, and briefly cover the basics of zebrafish embryonic development. The chapter then describes the heart development of a zebrafish in detail, in particular noting similarities to other vertebrate species. Finally, it proceeds stepwise through the process of heart development, discussing what is known about particular events and describing mutants whose study may shed light on these various processes. The zebrafish heart mutants described in this review offer tremendous opportunities to further the understanding of essentially all aspects of early cardiac development. As detailed morphological and molecular analyses of the mutant phenotypes emerge, a more precise classification of the various mutants will become possible. This classification will enable these loci to be ordered into genetic pathways controlling specific aspects of heart development, such as definitive heart tube formation or looping, and may also indicate those loci critical for the coordination of these diverse developmental events. The generation of allelic series of varying phenotypic strength will aid epistasis testing and may allow additional genes important for heart development to be identified through screens for phenotypic suppressors or enhancers. The isolation of the genes affected in the zebrafish cardiac mutants reveal the molecules that control vertebrate heart development. The embryological manipulations and detailed observation possible in the zebrafish also allows to extend molecular knowledge, revealing how genes regulate the behavior of the cells that form the heart and the rest of the cardiovascular system." @default.
