- W68720240 abstract "Neonatal evaluation provides an opportunity to understand both development in utero as well as to predict future functioning in the child. The Brazelton scale assumes considerable change in infant performance during the neonatal period, and using this scale it has been discovered that the organizational processes or recovery curves of the infant can predict future coping stategies in the child. Assessment is seen as a part of the intervention process for children at risk as well as a method of interacting in a structured way with all infants. Further, the role of the parents in preparing for the newborn child is discussed particularly in those families who are considered to be ‘at risk’. The role of neonatal assessment and interaction with the parent are seen to be, therefore, part of the process of helping the mother and the whole family to adjust to their newborn infant, especially when that infant has received neonatal trauma." @default.
