- W68753313 abstract "This chapter discusses the response of earth materials to dynamic loads. Many problems in geotechnology involve dynamic factors. These include seismic phenomena, such as earthquakes and rockbursts, shock loading on rock materials by mechanical impact and blasting, the study of energy transmission in rock-breaking tools and earth-excavation machinery, and the control of vibrations and noise generated by mining and civil engineering operations. The major concern lies with the response of rocks and earth materials to dynamic loads, either generated by the forces of nature, as in an earthquake or rock burst, or in the course of engineering operations, such as blasting, pile-driving, and rock-cutting. In all these processes, energy is generated and released at the source of impact and thereafter passes into the surrounding material in the form of pulses or vibrations. Vibrations of different modes of origin have fundamental similarities, but differ in their amplitude, wavelength, and frequency. If the energy source at the point of impact is sufficiently high, the impacting pulse may destroy the coherency of the surrounding earth material so that it no longer behaves as a solid. Some of the energy is consumed in this process and the remainder passes into the surrounding material as a compressive shock wave, which travels at a velocity depending upon the pressure in advance of, and behind, the shock front, but greater than sonic velocity in the material." @default.
