- W69182570 abstract "In a hot July of 1973 I arrived in London ready to begin work on a doctoral dissertation about Joseph Scaliger, a famous and terrifyingly learned classical scholar of the French Renaissance. I had been trained at the University of Chicago in Renaissance intellectual history, classics, and the history of science. I had read secondary literature in English, French, Italian, and German. And I knew precisely the coordinates that Scaliger occupied on my mental map of Renaissance culture. His work on the history of classical texts and calendars formed part of the of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It reflected, that is, the development of a wider historical consciousness and the effort to frame precise critical rules for evaluating sources that preoccupied betterknown intellectuals of his time and place, like Louis Le Roy and Jean Bodin. My task, I thought, was to draw from Scaliger's work a more technical and detailed account of this revolution than previous scholars had constructed from Bodin and company. Powered by these notions, not loaded down by learning, and kept afloat by a welcome but exiguous Fulbright Fellowship, I steered my fragile craft into what my teachers at Chicago and the Fulbright authorities agreed was the only appropriate harbor: the long, dark, narrow office, crammed with apparently unrelated books de omni re scibili et quibusdam aliis, of Arnaldo Momigliano, then in his last" @default.
