- W69184098 abstract "Nevitt Sanford is a distinguished American psychologist whose career has been unusually rich and complicated. Trained in the academy, he never allowed himself to become cloistered. His name is associated with such diverse concerns as alcoholism, prison life, the college campus, the mental hospital, the authoritarian personality in sum, with various kinds of individuals and with individuals in a variety of social situations. All the while he has been active in a number of professional associations and has worked exceedingly well with his colleagues as an editor, coauthor, and most recently as the director of the Institute for the Study of Human Problems at Stanford University. From time to time he has written a paper or two summarizing a specific phase of his research, and now he has gathered some of those past writings and some new observations into a first-rate book whose title, Self and Society, indicates its almost daring breadth of concern. Social scientists essentially sort themselves out into two camps, those who look at the individual's mind and attitudes (whether kept to himself or shared with others) and those whose chief interest is in the world people must every day confront, be it the concrete neighborhoods they frequent or the intangible but equally influential climate of values and traditions they call their own enough to pass down over the generations. Although an intellectual division of labor is necessary in any field, the nature of man's life on this planet does not lend itself very well to the process of abstraction," @default.
