- W69204292 abstract "It is already February in the school term. Now as watch Brian wish that I'd taken notes from the first moment I'd met him. His story, the development of a writer, is worth telling; yet have nothing to rely on but started pieces, finished products, and memory. In a way chastise myself for not being a true ethnographer, a teacher-researcher who writes down everything. But then how could have known in August what know now? How could have realized that the dialogues with Brian could exemplify the story that have to tell about writing, about learning, about knowing. Then again, perhaps remembered impressions and images are as good as documented ones. do remember that liked Brian immediately. He had a sparkle in his eyes, a dimple when he smiled, and he loved stories. He was fourteen in the sixth grade, a reluctant reader at best; but he loved to be read to. And in that first week that he came to Reading Lab, was reading the sixth graders a mystery. He seemed to hang on every word, second guessed a lot of what happened, and often tried to convince me to read one more chapter. In all probability that kind of a con job was a ploy to get out of reading himself; though liked to believe that he was genuinely interested in the story too. He had been in my class only a week when he was absent for an extended period as a result of an accident. accident was written up in the newspaper. A drunk driver had rammed into a pick up over on the coast. One child was killed, another hospitalized and in a coma; Brian returned with a broken arm. During the time that Brian had been gone, the rest of the class had begun writing. He had missed that first mini-lesson that had given on writing - convincing the students that each had a story to tell. He had missed the question when had asked the class if they preferred being given an assignment or choosing their own topics, and he'd missed the response of the class who overwhelmingly acknowledged their preference to choose their own topics. Some students had begun easily - My First Dog, My Brother and the Chickens, The Day Went to the Moon. Brian, however, did not begin easily. When gave the assignment to him, he grumbled and seemed almost disappointed that it wasn't his writing arm that was broken. I don't have anything to write, he complained. What about the accident? probed, trying to be helpful. What am gonna say" @default.
