- W69401918 abstract "Experiments in plants and animals with H/sup 3/-labeled macromolecules showed that exogenous ribonucleic acid, deoxyribonucleic acid, and ovalbumin can penetrate cell membranes and become deposited in tissues in macromolecular form. The injected macromolecules are taken up particularly by proliferating tissues, as shown by the rapid uptake of intraperitoneally or intravenously injected DNA-H/ sup 3/ by the ovaries and vagina of prepupertal mice treated with estradiol. This phenomenon can also be demonstrated in vitro; cultured ascites tumor cells were found to take up RNA, DNA, and proteins. Irradiation of the cells with 800- r doses of x rays inhibited this incorporation of macromolecules, but not that of metabolites from the culture medium. In norirradiated cells the ingested RNA was selectively taken up by mitochondria, without affecting the respiratory activity of the cells. Injection of RNA-H/sup 3/ intraperitoneally in mice results in the rapid labeling of most organs. (H.H.D.)" @default.
