- W69436277 abstract "Transmission rattle is a major concern in the automotive industry. It occurs as the direct result of system downsizing (reducing the gap between the transmission input, output and lay shafts) and increased engine order torsionals. The latter has been the result of a growing trend towards higher output torque as a drive towards greater use of diesel powered engines. The torsional oscillations onboard the transmission input shaft cause repetitive impacts between the mounted pinions with the loose unselected gear wheels due to their proximity. These events cause airborne noise radiation at the impact sites as well as transmission of vibration through the output shafts and their support bearings to the transmission casing, as structure-borne noise. The phenomenon does not pose any structural integrity issues, but is nevertheless quite disconcerting and, thus, has become a build quality issue for vehicle customers. The chapter shows that in the presence of backlash any form of contact separation causes rattling condition. With light loads and in the presence of a film of lubricant entrained into the contact domain, repetitive squeeze and separation effect is a key contributor to the rattle phenomenon." @default.
