- W69795185 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of memory. The classical controversy as to whether learning and memory should be considered as one process or two separate and continuous processes need not worry education students unduly. Apparent movement observed in a spiral design constantly moving upward or felt when sitting in a stationary train and the adjacent train moves out slowly also fall into the perception category. The learner in the active organization of his perceptions sometimes makes errors in a search for symmetry, rhythm, and meaning. Attention or the registration of perception is a highly selective process; an organism makes no attempt to assimilate the total number and variety of percepts that make up the environment at any given moment. The concept of a two-stage or dual storage memory system although not new in psychology has only recently been scientifically investigated by research workers, such as Hebb in neurophysiology and Broadbent in the study of communication. If the period of reverberation is short in duration, the activity trace that it makes soon dies out or decays. On the other hand, if the period is more prolonged and there is repetitive reverberatory activity, then structural changes occur in neuronal connections." @default.
